If I May…
Sarah comes in every week to read her books and have a coffee. Sometimes a large Latte, sometimes a small. Not much of a talker and I dont ever seem to be able to manage to get more than two words out of her.
But yesterday she overheard me having a laugh with the Chef. I had said, "You can start to learn to play guitar at 60 of course you can! Just do it! Picture yourself at 65 playing it and walk toward that image. As if youre a plant growing towards light. Have fun with it! Enjoy the journey!"
Then a voice. The only person in the Cafe at that point. "You're mistaking temporal unfolding for structural necessity. Yes, plants grow over time, but time is not what makes growth real. Structure is. What I mean is that the so-called "future self" people chase is not unfolding from structure, it's being projected by contradiction. If the current system contains unresolved contradiction, it scaffolds an imagined future state to resolve it symbolically- one day, you say, I'll be aligned, whole, free. That's not growth. That's delay through simulation. Nature doesn't delay
for symbolic resolution. It follows structure. A seed becomes a tree not because it's striving to be a better version of itself, but because it's already
structurally encoded to do so. There's no gap between seed and tree, just conditions being met.
What you're calling growth is often protracted contradictior management. I'm saying: if there's no contradiction, there's no future self required. The only thing that "unfolds" is what's
already structurally present. If it needs scaffolding, it isn't growth
It's compensation for incoherence."
Oh. Ok then......................thanks Sarah.
